For counselors who treat clients struggling with a fear of open spaces, virtual reality can offer multiple benefits.

A client with a fear of open spaces, often tends to avoid them, but in VR, though convincing, they are aware that physically, they are still in a environment they feel safe and comfortable in. This makes it easier for them to get used to, and practice with experiencing open spaces.

The VR counselor can influence the experience by adjusting the heights of the buildings, the time of day, or the amount of fog in the city. If you have a camera connected to your computer, you can also visually guide your client through the experience.

To limit the effects of motion sickness, you can also add a vignette around your client’s vision or adjust the walking speed.
